Saturday Conference 26th Feb 2011

After a slightly tricky, delaid start we managed to get going fairly quickly. The workshop went extremely well and many thanks to Clara for working with me on this one. Feedback from the day will be collated and fed back to you either via moodle or directly. Clara has taken the feedback with her to read.

I hope that everyone will digest and begin to use some of the techniques we explored in their own practice, as artists, as group facilitators, in your personal albums and collections.

Week 7: Joel Walker - going deeper

Tonight's lecture introduced the work of Joel Walker, associate of Judy Weiser and David Krauss. Joel is a psychiatrist and a photographer. He has developed his work from an intial 'induction' into photography in a year out, before starting his practice, on a world tour taking photographs all the way. He has introduced two main areas of contribution to the field; photoprojectives (the use of photographs in exhibiton and later, in personal or group working). The second contribution is using photographs (taken by Joel) to support people making photostories about life events (life is a journey). These photostories are stored on his web site - Portraits of the Human Spirit.

Week 3: Judy Weiser Video

I hope that watching the video tonight made some things clearer. There are many approaches to photography as research and what we saw tonight is a different approach, psychology based.

When I got home tonight I looked up Vivian Maier (Photographer/Nanny) and found

1. A utube link to many of her photographs
2. A blog kept by the guy who has found her negatives and is scanning them with another load of photos.

It occured to me that many of these photos would be highly suitable for a collection of projective photos for those of you who are beginning to compile your own set of photos for use with groups!

Even more people turned up - so I forgot to send that piece of pink paper around for everyone to sign in! Will do it next week. Delighted that we had chocolate biscuits to share and I was given a beautiful bunch of tulips too. Thanks, thanks and thanks. I needed a bit of appreciation!

Clarified the first assignment with a new diagram. Lecture went well but we finished early which was good because there was enough time to talk to people.

Everyone seemed clear about the assignment for Week 2 - find three websites and write a short report on them clarifying the difference between phototherapy - therapeutic photography - and activism website about social change. Bit of a challenge but there you go.
