Update Week 1

January 19, 2011
I'm finding it impossible not to think about photography!  I keep seeing things and finding things on the net.  I want everyone to do the same so I have set up some tantalising bits of information by using the forum on Moodle.  I hope that everyone is receiving my posts (via university email address) but I need to check everyone knows how to do this.

Week 1 - Photography as Research

January 13, 2011
Opened with 18 students all jammed into the room.  I know that this is not ideal, its hot and sweaty, but I would much rather use the office than the lecture room, because it really helps with discussion.  I thought the first session went well and I want to put my four photos up, so everyone can see what I am doing with a blog.

#7 Finland - Conference

October 28, 2010
Up early and away to the conference venue.  This was a college building and we were in the main hall/sports hall.  More like a school than a college with the room being huge and high ceilinged and covered in wood panelling.  All the IT worked well and no problems.  The audience was made up of students (from several courses) academics/teachers, health representatives and other interested people.  About 100 people.  J did the introductions and I launched into my talk.  I found myself refering t...

#6 Finland

October 28, 2010
Arrived in Finland safely and the first thing I had to deal with was an interview with the local paper!  Picked up at the airport by J who was going to be looking after me for my stay.  It was snowing when I arrived although not cold.  J took me to the hotel in the middle of Kokkola and I had a few minutes to drop off my luggage, quick wash and down for the interview.  First I met a photographer who's english was not good, but we managed.  Glass of wine in hand, the interview began.  Not quit...

#5 Facebook Film

October 24, 2010
Saw the Facebook Film last night with No1 son.  Good and exciting film, kept your attention well.  But appauled by the main point of the film - the predudice around belonging/not belonging to University Fraternities.  Found this very difficult.  Understand wealth and power, but this notion of envy and resentment seems very childish to me.

Also amazed at the concept of history and the shrinking of time so that what happened in 2004 is now influencial history!

#4 Its been a week now.....

October 21, 2010
Its a week since the London conference and things have been as busy as usual. Had dinner with a friend who works for a PCT over the weekend with lots of opportunity to chew over the main parts of the conference and how this will be affecting her work.  Busy busy week settling new students in and have the first management meetings of the year and getting all the admin in place.  Off to Finland next week so hopefully interesting pictures to come.

#3 Health & Well-being Conference

October 14, 2010
What an exhausting day!  400 delegates, speakers, breakout groups, lunch, more breakouts and more speakers ending at 5.00 and then negotiating a rush-hour to get home.

The conference overall was very interesting although not particularly inspirational.  It was main stream, not related to art at all but most stimulation for getting a feel of where the government is going, where the money will go.
My quick impressions are these:

1.  Health & Well-being are linked but the emphasis is changing to w...

#2 Health and Well-being Conference

October 12, 2010
OK, the site is up on line now and looking ok.
On Thursday I am going to this conference
http://www.govnet.co.uk/health/programme.html

I'm hoping that I will get some idea about the future of the Arts in the policy for Health and Well-being.  It looks to me as if this current government is going to promote well-being in the workplace and as a part of health and safety initiatives as a way of reducing the demand on the National Health Service as we know it.  It also seems to have links with the...
