Saturday Conference 26th Feb 2011
After a slightly tricky, delaid start we managed to get going fairly quickly. The workshop went extremely well and many thanks to Clara for working with me on this one. Feedback from the day will be collated and fed back to you either via moodle or directly. Clara has taken the feedback with her to read. I hope that everyone will digest and begin to use some of the techniques we explored in their own practice, as artists, as group facilitators, in your personal albums and collections.... Week 7: Joel Walker - going deeper
Tonight's lecture introduced the work of Joel Walker, associate of Judy Weiser and David Krauss. Joel is a psychiatrist and a photographer. He has developed his work from an intial 'induction' into photography in a year out, before starting his practice, on a world tour taking photographs all the way. He has introduced two main areas of contribution to the field; photoprojectives (the use of photographs in exhibiton and later, in personal or group working). The second contribution is usin... Week 6: What a lecture!
Christine Nunez, followed by Photostory and Lomography! And, Miina's Most beautiful girl in the world. Wow! Maybe this was a bit too much, it seemed very packed but the conversations, discussions, questions and answers were good. Met up with Clara and discussed the workshop format on Wednesday morning too.... very excited about doing this, especially with Clara. Posted information about the Saturday workshop today - hope everyone does the homework. Continue reading ...

Video
I hope that watching the video tonight made some things clearer. There are many approaches to photography as research and what we saw tonight is a different approach, psychology based. When I got home tonight I looked up Vivian Maier (Photographer/Nanny) and found 1. A utube link to many of her photographs 2. A blog kept by the guy who has found her negatives and is scanning them with another load of photos. It occured to me that many of these photos would be highly suitable for a collecti... Search Results - BBC Website - Photography
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-11954293There are a series of websites available on the BBC, linked to TV programmes (or iplayer). This one about a documentary photographer's exploration of Africa and the Arabian Gulf. Continue reading ...
Week 2 - Jo Spence
Even more people turned up - so I forgot to send that piece of pink paper around for everyone to sign in! Will do it next week. Delighted that we had chocolate biscuits to share and I was given a beautiful bunch of tulips too. Thanks, thanks and thanks. I needed a bit of appreciation! Clarified the first assignment with a new diagram. Lecture went well but we finished early which was good because there was enough time to talk to people. Everyone seemed clear about the assignment for Week 2... Continue reading ...
Update Week 1
I'm finding it impossible not to think about photography! I keep seeing things and finding things on the net. I want everyone to do the same so I have set up some tantalising bits of information by using the forum on Moodle. I hope that everyone is receiving my posts (via university email address) but I need to check everyone knows how to do this. Continue reading ...
Week 1 - Photography as Research
Opened with 18 students all jammed into the room. I know that this is not ideal, its hot and sweaty, but I would much rather use the office than the lecture room, because it really helps with discussion. I thought the first session went well and I want to put my four photos up, so everyone can see what I am doing with a blog. Continue reading ...
#7 Finland - Conference
Posted by Kate Broom on Thursday, October 28, 2010,
Up early and away to the conference venue. This was a college building and we were in the main hall/sports hall. More like a school than a college with the room being huge and high ceilinged and covered in wood panelling. All the IT worked well and no problems. The audience was made up of students (from several courses) academics/teachers, health representatives and other interested people. About 100 people. J did the introductions and I launched into my talk. I found myself refering t... Continue reading ...

Finland 1
Arrived in Finland safely and the first thing I had to deal with was an interview with the local paper! Picked up at the airport by J who was going to be looking after me for my stay. It was snowing when I arrived although not cold. J took me to the hotel in the middle of Kokkola and I had a few minutes to drop off my luggage, quick wash and down for the interview. First I met a photographer who's english was not good, but we managed. Glass of wine in hand, the interview began. Not quit... Continue reading ...
#5 Facebook Film

Saw the Facebook Film last night with No1 son. Good and exciting film, kept your attention well. But appauled by the main point of the film - the predudice around belonging/not belonging to University Fraternities. Found this very difficult. Understand wealth and power, but this notion of envy and resentment seems very childish to me. Also amazed at the concept of history and the shrinking of time so that what happened in 2004 is now influencial history! Continue reading ...
#4 Its been a week now.....
Posted by Kate Broom on Thursday, October 21, 2010,
Its a week since the London conference and things have been as busy as usual. Had dinner with a friend who works for a PCT over the weekend with lots of opportunity to chew over the main parts of the conference and how this will be affecting her work. Busy busy week settling new students in and have the first management meetings of the year and getting all the admin in place. Off to Finland next week so hopefully interesting pictures to come. #3 Health & Well-being Conference
Posted by Kate Broom on Thursday, October 14, 2010,
What an exhausting day! 400 delegates, speakers, breakout groups, lunch, more breakouts and more speakers ending at 5.00 and then negotiating a rush-hour to get home. The conference overall was very interesting although not particularly inspirational. It was main stream, not related to art at all but most stimulation for getting a feel of where the government is going, where the money will go. My quick impressions are these: 1. Health & Well-being are linked but the emphasis is changing to w... Continue reading ...
#2 Health and Well-being Conference
OK, the site is up on line now and looking ok. On Thursday I am going to this conference http://www.govnet.co.uk/health/programme.html I'm hoping that I will get some idea about the future of the Arts in the policy for Health and Well-being. It looks to me as if this current government is going to promote well-being in the workplace and as a part of health and safety initiatives as a way of reducing the demand on the National Health Service as we know it. It also seems to have links with the... Continue reading ...
